Obviously this is a bit apocalyptic but given the human propensity to ready, fire, aim who’s to say.<\/p>\n

\u201cComputers need to be accountable to machines,\u201d a top Microsoft executive told a roomful of reporters in Washington, DC, on February 10, three days after the company launched<\/a> its new AI<\/strong>-powered Bing search engine.<\/p>\n

Everyone laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cSorry! Computers need to be accountable to <\/span>people<\/em>!\u201d he said, and then made sure to clarify, \u201cThat was <\/span>not<\/em> a Freudian slip.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Slip or not, the laughter in the room betrayed a latent anxiety. Progress in artificial intelligence has been moving so unbelievably fast lately that the question is becoming unavoidable: How long until AI<\/strong> dominates our world to the point where we\u2019re answering to it rather than it answering to us?<\/p>\n

First, last year, we got <\/span>DALL-E 2<\/a> and <\/span>Stable Diffusion<\/a>, which can turn a few words of text into a stunning image. Then Microsoft-backed OpenAI gave us ChatGPT, which can write essays so convincing that it freaks out everyone from teachers (what if it helps students cheat?) to <\/span>journalists<\/a> (could it replace them?) to <\/span>disinformation experts<\/a> (will it amplify conspiracy theories?). And in February, we got Bing <\/span>(a.k.a. Sydney)<\/a>, the chatbot that both <\/span>delighted<\/a> and <\/span>disturbed<\/a> beta users with eerie interactions. Now we\u2019ve got <\/span>GPT-4<\/a> \u2014 not just the latest large language model, but a multimodal one that <\/span>can respond<\/a> to text as well as images.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Fear of falling behind Microsoft has prompted Google and Baidu to accelerate<\/a> the launch of their own rival chatbots. The AI<\/strong> race is clearly on.<\/p>\n
