By Nick Kolakowski<\/a> – Earlier this year, two partners at prominent venture-capital firm Andreessen Horowitz published\u00a0an interesting blog post<\/a>\u00a0about\u00a0artificial intelligence<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(A.I.). Specifically, is A.I. (and by extension,\u00a0machine learning<\/a>) capable of powering a sustainable business? Or is the tech industry infatuated with a technology that\u2019s just a lot of empty hype?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a worthy question as we close out 2020, considering how much money and resources companies are pouring into all things A.I.-related (often despite budget cutbacks related to the COVID-19 pandemic). Martin Casado and Matt Bornstein, the partners in question, conclude that A.I. is indeed viable\u2014but that A.I.-centric businesses can\u2019t operate like traditional software firms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Specifically, A.I. companies have \u201clower gross margins\u201d (due to the need for lots of expensive and talented humans, as well as infrastructure expenses), \u201cscaling challenges\u201d (due to edge cases), and \u201cweaker defensive moats\u201d (because of more A.I. tools and apps becoming commoditized, among other issues).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTraining\u00a0a single A.I. model can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars (or\u00a0more<\/a>) in\u00a0compute<\/em>\u00a0resources,\u201d they wrote. \u201cWhile it\u2019s tempting to treat this as a one-time cost, retraining is increasingly recognized as an ongoing cost, since the data that feeds AI models tends to change over time (a phenomenon known as \u2018data drift\u2019).\u201d Read On:<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
