But amidst the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, some technology companies and scientists are looking to AI for a positive impact instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.pixabay.com\/photo\/2020\/03\/15\/14\/24\/pandemic-4933793__340.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"370\" height=\"170\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<strong>AI<\/strong> and high tech in general have gotten something of a bad rap recently, but this crisis shows how <strong>AI <\/strong>can potentially do a world of good,\u201d said Oren Etzioni, CEO of Seattle\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/allenai.org\/\">Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI2)<\/a>\u00a0and a University of Washington computer science professor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Etzioni was speaking on a call Monday organized by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, as part of an announcement of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pages.semanticscholar.org\/coronavirus-research\">a project called the COVID-19 Open Research Dataset<\/a>, aka CORD-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The initiative, building on AI2\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.semanticscholar.org\/\">Semantic Scholar project<\/a>, uses natural language processing to analyze scientific papers about coronavirus, including the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19. The goal is to help researchers better analyze and understand a growing set of scholarly articles about coronavirus.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2020\/ai2-microsoft-team-tech-leaders-use-ai-war-coronavirus\/\">As reported by GeekWire on Monday<\/a>, the technology helps to combat information overload, making it easier for researchers find relevant studies.
